Prove you can understand basic Japanese

The JLPT N5 is the lowest level of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test. This official exam demonstrates that you can follow some basic Japanese language.

On this page, you will find information about the things you must learn before taking this exam. We will also share with you a list of books that will help you reach the level required to face the JLPT N5 serenely.

Popular JLPT N5 book series

Several collections of Japanese textbooks allow you to learn the basics of this language. Genki and Minna no Nihongo series are not specifically designed for the JLPT, but they will help you acquire all the knowledge required to pass the N5 level. As for the Nihongo So-Matome JLPT N5 textbook, we recommend it if you have already started to learn Japanese with another method beforehand. The explanations are less clear than in the two previous collections, but the book covers all of what may appear in an official JLPT N5 exam.
