Minna no Nihongo books are divided in four levels: Shokyu 1, Shokyu 2, Chukyu 1, and Chukyu 2. If Shokyu 1 and 2 are for beginners, Chukyu 1 and 2 are made for intermediate students.

Shokyu 1: Beginner Japanese

Shokyu 1 textbook and workbooks are essential for beginners who have studied Japanese for less than 100 hours. We recommend learning hiragana and katakana before starting to use these books, because there are no explanations on how you should read kana. Shokyu 2: Elementary Japanese

Shokyu 2 textbook and workbooks are for beginners who have finished “Shokyu 1” or have already studied Japanese for 100 to 150 hours.
